The Effective Consultation Course - A new course from the GP Update Team

FAQs

What will the course cover? Some research about consultation behaviour and medico-legal risk. A summary of the Calgary Cambridge framework for understanding consultation behaviours. A close focus on:- the beginning of the consultation; patient expectations; getting the full story and fashioning great explanations.

Will the course suit experienced GPs? Very much so. The course was originally designed for the needs of this group.

I'm sitting the nMRCGP, should I come? Yes. Our course is good preparation for the CSA exam and is probably best attended BEFORE going to a more formal CSA course.

I've just been on maternity leave and think my brain has gone to jelly - will the course help me?  Yes. The challenge of returning to consulting with patients is cited by maternity-leave returners high up their list of anxieties. Our course can help.

I've just had a career break and I'm returning to general practice - how helpful will the course be for me? In many ways this is similar to the situation after maternity leave, only with a longer break. The challenge of the clinical consultation is often a major issue in this situation - again, our course can help.

I'm a Registrar, should I come?  Yes. If you want to pick up some effective consultation habits at the very start of your GP career. We have doctors who come on our course in ST1, and then again in ST3.

Why should I come on this course as opposed to others?  There is no directly equivalent course that is run regularly anywhere in the UK, as far as we are aware. The course is well established and is run by a facilitator with 20 years experience of GP, who also has expertise in the field of consultation effectiveness and who has experience and skill as a trainer.
